This Thursday (13th June) is the 7th anniversary of one of the most striking games of Timão’s road to winning Copa Libertadores da América. On the 13th of June 2012, Corinthians played against Santos for the semi-finals of the tournament at Vila Belmiro and were leading 1-0 through an amazing goal from Emerson Sheik during the first half.
For this game, Tite chose the following Corinthians’ line up: Cássio; Alessandro, Chicão, Leandro Castán, Fábio Santos; Ralf, Paulinho, Alex, Danilo; Jorge Henrique and Emerson Sheik. Wallace replaced Alex during the game.
During first half, in the 14th minute, Timão got their first goal opportunity. Emerson Sheik received the ball and tried his chance, but the shot was out on the right hand side of Santos’ net. Santos were fighting for their chances, but were always finding a strong defence from Corinthians.
Timão was levelling the field and also challenging the opponent’s defence. In the 27th minute, during one of their plays, Alvinegro took the lead. Paulinho carried the ball to the Santos area and found Emerson Sheik free and the number 11 put it in the back of the net with a great shot, opening the scoring at Vila Belmiro.
Looking for the equalizer, Santos intensified the attacks but Corinthians defence remained strong. At minute 42, after a play down the left side, Elano received the ball alone and shot. With the side of the right foot, Fábio Santos stopped the goal.
In the second half, Santos kept pushing Corinthians but Alvinegra defenders were ruthless. And the star was Cássio, Conrinthians’ goalkeeper, who prevented the goal at minute 10 after a header from Borges.
In the next minute, Emerson Sheik entered in to the Santos area, after a one to one head with Durval, but the number 11 wasn’t able to score. Having already been yellow carded, the striker was sent off in the 32nd minute following a foul.
In the 35th minute, Cássio once again saved Corinthians. After a corner, Juan hit the target but Cássio was there. Corinthians kept being efficient in defence and ended the game with the score in their favour - this was very important for the second game, days after on the Pacaembu.
