Being one of the most outstanding drivers in Formula Indy for the last 20 years, Tony Kanaan is one of the main Brazilian names in national and international motorsport. But this Saturday he starts a whole new stage in his career: he will debut in e-Sports representing Corinthians in the INDYCAR Virtual competition.
With the sports quarantine imposed by the coronavirus/Covid-19, INDYCAR organisation decided to hold a virtual championship and Tony decided to start learning more about virtual motorsport.
“I didn't really want to have a simulator at home, because I know myself, I wouldn't go out anymore and it could affect my time with family, which I value a lot. However, with this quarantine I decided to explore e-sports and run Indy's virtual races, getting closer to the races and this new audience”, explained the Brazilian.
With 45 years old, the driver, born in Salvador (Bahia), will have his last season in Formula Indy, where he started in 1998 (when the category was divided into Cart and IRL). Adding this to the break due to coronavirus/COVID-19 situation, pushed him to enter this exciting sport's competition.
“I know I will have another big challenge ahead, because in VM (virtual motorsport) there is no G (gravitational) force. But anyway, I will do my best, as always, and maybe it will be a fun way out for retirement!”, commented Tony before the debut, scheduled for next Saturday (28).
Tony should compete in the official INDYCAR Series Virtual competitions that starts on Saturday, as well as in the national virtual motorsports leagues with Timão's team, such as F1BC, IRB eSports and Virtual Challenge. For the INDYCAR event, which is scheduled to start at 5 pm (Brasilia time), the Rally Timão board is planning to make a live broadcast on its channel, with exclusive images from the cockpit and race.
